---------- Civilian Name: Julia Thorne Magical Name: Crossed Rose (aka 'Rose') Age: 16 Height: 5'0" (she's such a shortie) Background: Julia was born and has lived her entire life in a lower middle-class family in a questionable part of town in a big city on the ocean. She's always had far too much on her plate, enough that parents inclined to put her in stuff to keep her busy became more inclined to try and get her to do less. Consistently a B-A student who would very likely be an A-B if she focused on more than five things at once. Life was normal, if a bit crowded, until about a month ago when a mysterious figure and a monster almost lead to her death. She was saved by the sudden arrival of an irritated THING that decided to use her to defeat the monster for its own reasons. Now thanks to Puck, she's being dragged around defeating monsters because he says so. Puck signed her up for the Tournament without her knowledge and is pretty much forcing her to compete. She's far from happy about it. Personality: Julia doesn't mind and is pretty congenial towards others as long as they're not getting in her way and in any teamwork or cooperation setting doing what she tells them. She thinks she knows best how to handle any given situation and gets combatitive and stubborn fast if not listened to or told otherwise. She usually has three or more activities/projects going at once in a ridiculously eclectic spread and handles upsets to her schedule and plans rather badly. If you want to get her to do something she wouldn't normally do, you'll pretty much have to manipulate her into making her think it was her own idea (and subsequently letting her take credit for it if applicable). Her multi-tasking often leads to no project being done as well as it could be if she'd just focused on it. Transformation Phrase (caps mean emphasis): The STARS have CROSSED, now RISE the ROSE, Crossed ROSE! Transformation: Julia has no transformation item. Instead, her and Puck make physical contact in some form (whether comfortable for Julia or not) and she shouts her phrase. Puck turns into rose red light and expands over her. The light pushes back over her in an explosion of rose petal shapes, leaving her in her magical form. The petals reform as Puck on the opposite side of Julia of wherever they touched. Battle Strategy: Julia is a strategist in battle, relying more on wit than power or magic. When physical confrontations happen, she leans more towards agility and using her environment, sometimes in unexpected ways. Her biggest weaknesses from a combat standpoint are her tendency to rush to finish and trouble adapting to unexpected circumstances and/or creative strategies.
Powers/Attacks: Julia's magical attacks are widespread and varied, united under a theme of roses, rose vines, and one of the four classical western elements. Each attack requires a ten syllable invocation (which can be interrupter) ending in a word specific to the element being used - the word is part of the syllable count. All attacks have to be announced in iambic pentameter (explanation: [link]) or they won't work, but the stresses can be forced (this basically means as long as you have ten syllables you're good.)
The following are just examples of an invocation (with the elemental word) and effect - Julia is limited only by her creativity.
Air Elemental Word: Ariel Example Invocation: PeTAL, flurRY, blind MY foes, ARiEL! Example Effect: A storm of rose petals obscures the opponent's vision.
Water Elemental Word: Larissa Example: WaTER, NouRISH, grow COver, LArisSA! Example Effect: A blast of water makes any magically summoned petals, roses, or vines from before grow to provide additional cover.
Fire Elemental Word: Deimos Example: BurnING, spinNING, torNAdo BURST, DeiMOS! Example Effect: A tornado of magically summoned rose petals traps her opponents in a ring of fire (limited by the fact that it'll vanish once the petals are burnt away).
Earth Elemental Word: Ends in Dione. Example Invocation: Vines OUTstrech, LET fall MY foes' GRACE, DiONE! (Note: Dione has three syllables (Day-OH-nee), but Julia often mispronounces it to have two (Dee-OWN) - either pronunciation can be used.) Example Effect: Rose vines come out of the ground and restrain the enemy.
Mascot Character: Puck Personality: Puck does his own thing. He's actually rather prostrating towards authority figures, or at the very least puts on a good show of it as he's more than willing to complain about them when their backs are turned. Seems to think he's better than most people and isn't easily flapped. Spends a lot of time bossing Julia around and doesn't seem to care about her schedule - his stuff is SO much more important, although he's never once deigned to explain just WHY. A lot of the stuff he does is on whim because it seems interesting at the time. Background: He popped into Julia's life one evening, granting her the power to save it, and has been dragging her off to do magical girl things since. When he heard about Tournament Cosmos somehow, he decided Julia should join and secretly made an audition tape of her that involved some of her day to day life and lots of fighting. He probably won't hear the end of it any time soon. Physical Abilities: Puck's tail is actually prehensile, like a monkey's. The curve at the end is it's natural 'at rest' position the way a human's arms are down when they're at rest. Powers: Puck is basically a living henshin 'item' for Julia. He also seems capable of dimension hopping. For the purposes of Tournament Cosmos, he can take others across dimensions with him - but he's only willing to use it to bring Julia to the dimension of the tournament and won't be using it again. Special Abilities: Puck will sometimes say or do things using knowledge he can't possibly have in a sort of leaning on the fourth wall method. It will never be to help or hinder and exists merely as a nod to those outside of the fourth wall - the most he'd use it for is confusing people (and occasionally lampshading things).
Special Note: Crossed Rose is heavily based on Shakespeare and his works, but Shakespeare never existed in Julia's world. There was a great playwright - Marlowe never was killed/died mysteriously and continued on to write many more plays. His works hold the same prominence and literature shaping in Julia's world that Shakespeare holds in ours. The bottom line of this is if you make any Shakespeare jokes about Julia or her powers, she won't get it. Character, Art (c) *MugenGinga Tournament-Cosmos (c) #Tournament-Cosmos
Actually, both western and eastern did - I don't know enough about history and mythological origins to say if one borrowed or not.
The following is to the best of my knowledge and may be incorrect:
China had five: Earth, Fire, Water, Metal, and Wood Europe had four (I'm not sure when the fifth came about - before and it was ignored or after): Fire, Water, Air/Wind, Earth
I don't know about China, but in Europe they were equated to a lot of science (it's mere superstition now, but for quite some time it was a very real medical and scientific type thing).
She's based heavily on Shakespeare, so I've been doing research. She's going to be the main character of a webcomic I plan on launching sometime this summer, this is just a fun AU thing so I can mess around with her before the official launch. XD
When I saw your girl's outfit I almost fell out of my chair. XD
Shakespeare doesn't actually exist in her world (basically Marlowe didn't get himself killed/mysteriously dead and became the pre-eminent playwright instead - he wrote a lot more plays and ended up rising to the historical importance Shakespeare has in our world - there's totally a Royal Marlowe Company in Julia's world) mostly because it would be too much of a hassle to explain the plays and a lot of the elements of Julia's setting. XD
Aha, so this is the infamous Rose! So much Shakespear! I love her outfit, especially the puffs and the socks, she's really rocking that rose motif huh? It does hit me that while her collar looks awesome, it might be a bit hindering in combat? Depending on how much actual combat/close encounters you're planning, of course. Then again, long hair/flowing fabric never seems to be a problem when it comes to magical girls, so what am I saying? Anyway, Puck is so cute too!
The collar HAD TO BE THERE. It could have been worse, have you LOOKED at Elizabethan collars? XDD Any excuse needed can totally be chalked up to magical girls! XD HEY AT LEAST SHE'S NOT WEARING HEELS AMIRITE.
It's pretty stiff, though. I imagine the worst it would do is screw up with her peripheral vision or mess with her ponytail.
I swear though, between the lack of heels and skin showing, she's breaking some kind of cardinal magical girl law!
PS - So do I, it's always been one of my favorite themes.

Also, yay freckles!
